๐ Share this article The Director's Debut The Warriors Revealed a Director of Courage and Style In 1994, this director Lee Tamahori made one of the most significant debuts of that era, operating at full capacity with his heartbreaking social-realist drama Once Were Warriors. The Mekes are a working-class indigenous family in South Auckland: the actor plays the drinking, fighting, bragging alpha-male benefit recipient the father, who returns from pub visits with his pathetic sycophant mates to terrorise and assault his wife Beth, portrayed by Rena Owen, and their five children. He is entirely indifferent to the future of his older boys who have drifted into gang life and illegal activities, as well as his gentle daughter the girl, who has talent as a storyteller. One son receives tattoos; another is taken to a youth detention where he is at least educated in the traditions of Maori culture โ the war dance and the taiaha warrior spear โ and learns dignity and self-respect. Meanwhile at the disordered home, Grace is assaulted by a repulsive acquaintance โBullyโ; disaster follows, and the mother passionately confronts the wretched Jake: โOur ancestors used to be fighters, but in contrast to you, Jake, they were people with mana, pride; people with spirit โฆโ Emotional Violence and Confident Direction Tamahori unleashed with such emotional violence, and landed sledgehammer punches with bar sequences, domestic moments and the gang ritual initiation scenes, handling them with assurance and energy. He created a gutsy, sincere film with a distinctly 90s streak of edginess. It was a hit with viewers and critics, and โ whether positive or negative โ deeply impressed studio heads in the film industry who recognized how he could bring this energy and talent to commercial projects. Hollywood Career and Diverse Work Stateside, the director made the dark mystery Mulholland Falls, about aggressive police officers who ignore protocol, and then the David Mamet-scripted adventure drama The Bear with the actor and his co-star as characters who trek through wild terrain after their plane crashes. (This moderate movie became a cult favorite when its producer he wrote amusingly about the turbulent production of shooting with an animal actor in his droll tinseltown memoir What Just Happened?) Along Came a Spider was a decent thriller, and he earned again directing the sequel in the XXX series XXX State of the Union. 007 Movie and Professional Changes Yet the peak, or perhaps the nadir, of his Hollywood career was directing the 007 film Die Another Day in 2002, with the star; it was the installment derided for having the worst gadget in the series โ the invisible car. What is the point an invisible car, audiences wondered? It was a vehicle that makes it difficult to recall where you parked it. Subsequent Projects and Return After this, Tamahori found some more interesting form. The The Devilโs Double in 2011 starred the actor in the twin roles of the dictator's hideous son Uday and as well as Udayโs decoy double, used to shield the heir from attack or kidnapping: this was a forceful, watchable movie which sidestepped typical doppelganger tropes. In subsequent times, Tamahori returned to the theme of Maori culture, directing The Convert in 2023, collaborating with writer Shane Danielsen. He proved to be an exceptional director โ but it was his debut, the heartfelt Once Were Warriors, that was his masterpiece.
