Powerful Gales Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the nation.

Intense winds hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 properties lacking electricity and compelled authorities to halt over 100 aircraft departures, according to local media.

These gusts are influencing the entire South Island and southern sections of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced uncommon high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been advised to remain inside, avoid travel, and make arrangements for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Measures

The power cut is primarily influencing homes mainly in the South Island, though officials say that power was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have stated that in various locations homes have lost their roofs, while utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was blown onto moving cars on a street by a powerful blast, in a incident that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the city have been suspended due to the gusts, and some roads and libraries are shut down.

At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Work Stoppages During Extreme Weather

These intense gusts on this day come as tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been called a "major walkout", calling for better pay and working conditions.

However the extreme weather has compelled them to change some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or called off.

Like conditions are also sweeping Australia, causing a heatwave to the country's outback.

Agencies have declared burning restrictions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
