Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
